COVID-19 Infections
It is encouraging that the Covid vaccine is now being made available to certain segments of the population. However, infection rates remain very high. What I am most concerned about is the increasing number of cases of “long” Covid that I am seeing. These patients are experiencing debilitating symptoms such as extreme fatigue, brain fog, cough, body aches, headaches, etc. long after the initial acute infection has resolved. I think that in many cases, this situation can be prevented with proper management of the acute infection.
In addition to keeping your immune system healthy with restful sleep, regular exercise, whole foods diet and supportive supplements, I strongly recommend that you schedule a phone or video consult with me if you become ill so that I can prescribe the appropriate vitamins, herbal formula and individualized homeopathic remedy. Please call with any questions or to schedule an appointment!
Speaking Opportunites
As many of you know, I have really enjoyed giving educational talks on a variety of health topics to the public. As in-person gatherings are not possible now, I am interested in finding venues for online webinar-type events. Please let me know if you belong to an organization which is looking for speakers. Additionally, if there are topics that you would like to hear me speak about, please contact me!
Lovely Legumes
Below are two recipes that I make at least once every winter which are warming, filling, inexpensive, tasty and vegan. They also happen to be high in fiber and protein. I hope you enjoy!
Hearty Pea Soup
Ingredients
1 onion, diced
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 bay leaf
1 tsp. celery seed
1 cup green split peas
1/4 cup barley or brown rice, uncooked
1/2 cup dried lima beans
2 qts. water
1 1/2 tsp. salt
dash pepper
1 carrot, chopped
3 stalks celery, diced
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1 potato, diced
1/2 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. thyme
Instructions
Saute onion in oil until soft, along with bay leaf and celery seed. Stir in split peas, barley or brown rice and lima beans. Add 2 quarts of water and bring to a boil. Cook on low heat, partially covered, for about an hour and a half. Add salt, pepper, vegetables and herbs. Turn heat down as low as possible and simmer another 30-45 minutes. Thin with additional water or stock if needed. Correct seasonings.

Red Split Lentils with Cumin Seed (Masoor Dal)
Ingredients
1 cup red split lentils picked over, washed and drained
4 1/3 cups water
2 thin slices of unpeeled ginger root
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1 tsp. salt or to taste
3 Tbsp. vegetable oil
pinch of ground asafetida (optional)
1 tsp. whole cumin seeds
1 tsp. ground coriander seeds
1/4 tsp. cayenne
2 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
Combine the lentils and the 4 1/3 cups water in a heavy pot. Bring to a simmer. Remove any scum that collects at the top. Add the ginger and turmeric. Stir to mix. Cover, leaving the lid very slightly ajar, turn heat to low and simmer gently for 1 1/2 hours or until lentils are tender. Stir every 5 minutes during the last half hour to prevent sticking. Add the salt and stir to mix. Remove ginger slices.
Heat the oil in a small frying pan over a medium flame. When hot, put in the asafetida. A second later, put in the cumin seeds. Let the seeds sizzle for a few seconds. Now put in the ground coriander and cayenne. Stir once and then quickly pour the contents of the pan, oil and spices, into the pot with the lentils. Stir to mix. Sprinkle the fresh cilantro over the top to serve. Can serve with rice, naan or chapati.

COVID-19 Vaccine
Happy New Year! I am back in the office and looking forward to seeing you again. My receptionist Kiva and I are receiving our first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine this week. I do recommend this vaccine for everyone this year, not only to keep you and your family healthy but to shorten the duration of the pandemic for everyone. I understand that some of you see me because you do not feel comfortable with vaccines. Please schedule a short phone consult if you have concerns that you would like to discuss.
There are some special considerations regarding this vaccine. For those who have an autoimmune condition such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus or Multiple Sclerosis and are taking a biologic medication, please consult with your rheumatologist or neurologist before receiving the vaccine. If you have a history of anaphylactic (life threatening) allergic reactions, please consult with me or your primary doctor before receiving the vaccine.
If you are a health care provider or work in a health care or long term care facility, likely you have already been contacted to schedule your vaccine. The next group who are eligible to receive the vaccine (Group 1B) will include health care workers who have less direct contact with Covid-19 patients (home health, hospice, pharmacy, dental), firefighters, EMS, police, correctional workers, funeral services, people aged 70 and older, frontline essential workers in education, food, manufacturing, agriculture, U.S. Postal Service, public transit, grocery, public health, those serving the homeless, essential officials in state government and essential frontline journalists. I know that many of you fall into this 1B category. Opportunities for this group to be vaccinated will soon be publicized but you may also register in advance at the following sites: Once you register, you will then be contacted for a vaccine appointment by your public health department.
